Oscar, Thanks for the answer. It is mentioned that this is not a nucleic acid stain. Is it possible for this phenomenon in that case?

Yes. the stain is getting into compromised cells. nuclear or not the cell will be pisitive for it when compared to healthy cells. Dead or dying cell are also more sticky.
