I normally starve my cells (including A549) overnight, no more than 24 hrs, with 0.5% serum media.

Serum starvation of A549 is usually done for 24 hours. However, it actually depends on what question(s) you are trying to address, based on which experiments are designed. The attached articles might be helpful references.
