I ordered some breast cancer cell lines from ATCC (CAMA-1, SKBR3, MDAMB453), but i don´t have the media that atcc recomend to culture those cell lines (EMEM, McCoy's 5a Medium Modified and L15, respectively).
I was wondering if i could culture them in other media (RPMI, DMEM or DMEM-F12) without affecting too much its viablity considering that they will be thawed and expanded in another media different from the one ATCC recommend upo arrival.
Firstly you could compare the ingredients and their concentrations of each media, just to see whether the differences are that large.
The ATTC recommend Leibovitz's L-15 Medium for MDA-MB-231 cell line (breast cancer). But, I was working with DMEM 10%-15% FBS without any problem.

Yes. I have done this with other cell lines, but never directly from a atcc vial, always using cells from further passages.
We usually buy one bottle of ATCC medium with each cell line, as these cells are accustomed to this medium. Then, after we have cultured them in this medium and frozen minimum two vials, we transfer them to the similar, much cheaper medium. I know, that if you compare medium from ATCC with medium from, e.g., Cytogene, Sigma or PAN Biotech, they are very similar. However, in some cases even small differences can be very important. I have seen very significant differences in cell line growth, where the differences between two medias used for celllculture were at the level of trace elements. Cells from ATCC and their transport are expensive enough, so it is better not to skimp on just one bottle of ATCC medium.
