The politicians and the general public strongly believe academics are arrogant, self-centred, egocentric and stingy set of people who are only good for vocabulary and criticism. I was even in a workshop where a facilitator openly apologized on behave of the academics present for repeatedly using command tone as if all attendees present are their students. To what extent do you agree with this?
The real academicians will be gentle enough and they will always work for the welfare of the society. They will never get satisfied by verbal actions, rather they believe in their actions and performing their duty.

The main issue, in this respect, is over-specialization ('idiot savant'), which makes certain people blind for the bigger picture around, but it cannot be considered typical for all academia and higher learning, in my humble opinion.
In my own opinion, it is a personal issue. Some people make their achievement in teaching and research make them proud and arrogant. As academics, you should be show respect to everyone both in the academic space and in other sphere of life. Thank you.
When comparing with other professions teaching is noble and good profession so it may not make academicians arrogance but it may depends on the personal and genetical make up of the individual.

Unfortunately, you are right, some of the academy's colleagues take the title and the situation and feel like the Gods of Olympus. In my opinion, the more titles you earn, the more humble you should be.

Sadly, yes! in view of my personal experiences.
This might happen. Some academicians are highly arrogant and very proud of themselves. But they only represent a minority. A true academic is the one who is polite and friendly with all people regardless of their educational or social status. True academicians give knowledge and science without looking or underestimating the talents of other people. They shouldn't think that they are superior to anyone they deal with.
Some of them are as you described but the majority are good people and some even have great sense of humor!

I agree with Dr Oluwaseun opinion. It is a personal and character issue. A few are arrogant due to the efforts they put in but wise people know they have more to learn, therefore, they remain simple and humble.

People are different, and academics are also people. A good expert is always open to discussion. The question, however, sometimes is if the opponent is not at a sufficient level - if he does not hinder debate due to "elemental stupidity" :-)
Scientists practice ethics in the lab (interaction), lecture room (interaction) and in conferences (local/international) that make scientists open to people and know how to deal with situations properly. It is unacceptable that scientists to be arrogant or other negative ethics, scientific community will strict them by many ways and have short academic life.

The high status does not mean that the owner is entitled to arrogance, but on the contrary must increase its modesty and humility to show the impact of scientific level and culture on his practical life and deal with all people. Yes, there are models of this type mentioned in your question, but I think it is a little because the university certificate does not give the powers to teach only, but must give restraint and moral balance.

My opinion. The academician is a human being. In general, arrogance is a big stupid because he does not see the abilities of others. Arrogant academician = a big stupid + a big zero. A nobe personne can't be an arrogant persoon (My opinion)
This is very common in the academic space and just to show off instead of contributing to knowledge and changing our society positively through research and development. Whatever you've achieved in life, someone else had achieved it and many have surpassed it so why must you be arrogant and disrespectful for little you have received.

I would suggest another characteristic that is more generalizable among academics than arrogance, egoism, or excessively high self-evaluation - academics (myself included) can rarely resist the opportunity to share their own perspective on almost any issue. The arduous process of earning a terminal degree qualifies each of us as an expert in some domain, no matter how small. We are self-referential authorities, documenting our expertise through the peer-review process, and demonstrating the capacity for at least some degree of critical thinking.
Therefore, we speak out, and we tend to do so with confidence. The best among us may temper that confidence with self-effacement, and the worst among us may assert faux confidence by using their critical facilities to exaggerate their own work and accomplishments, but we all speak out. In my view, this is what others tend to call arrogance.

Academics help in building the character, confidence, positive thinking to work towards achievements and add to knowledge base.
The main end of academic achievement is not to mean for only achieving successful career development or for business & professional success . Academic is mean for development of mind , body , & other such traits for which human being can be more of modest ,humble , for his own life for the family & even for his society .
With this if academic has other traits just as Arrogant , Egocentric ,& self Overrated ,in this line that such person has certainly negative traits which he has brought with him at the time of his birth & for this also it is very likely that he must also have an hereditary tradition .

This is very common, unfortunatelly, but, I strongly believe that those researchers who trully understood that what we actually know is nothing and that we have much more to learn and share, then we would understand the real meaning of being researchers. Let's try to be a little bit better in this sense and then we can change this vision from society.

SOME are actually too snob. People view academics are as such overlooking the exact steps of hard work and suffering those academics had been through before reaching this point. After being in an intense situation, any person is being changed (for good or for bad , it depends!), but this change is viewed as being snob! Look twice dear people!

Sometimes, academician look like a loner and not concerned with happenings around.
Based on researches from Dunning & Kruger (1999) it should be the exact opposit. When individuals develop a skill in a field, they underestimate their knowledge. But, the funny fact is that is the exact opposite when individuals have low skill: they overestimate it. So in my opinion, the more we learn, the less we know, and this humility is part of the whole process.

This is a very much subjective question and depends on one's experiences. I am not sure if there are any studies done on it but the truth is that one can only have an opinion which may or may not be applicable in all situations. Alternative is to ask people who have worked at many places in the world so as to have a good comparison. Since I have widely traveled, I also have an opinion. In the eastern part of the world which includes a majority of Asian countries (India, Bangladesh, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea etc), the answer is definitely YES. Academicians are arrogant, egocentric, self-overrating, and less efficient. The heirarchy is strong and they wont allow any genuine hard-worker to grow. However, the part of the world we traditionally think if west, academicians are well behaved and knowledgeable.

Most of the time, I do not like communicate with any politicians, because mostly they do not know anything. This is not their specialty. They should speak, not think. I do not exclude that I seem to them arrogant, egocentric and self-overrated. However, I am just not interested to talk with them and listen to their nonsense. Nevertheless, I do not claim that all politicians are ignorant, lying and narcissistic people...
That was the impression I picked up when doing my first degree. Not quite so awful doing my second, but my third was an arrogant, grumpy type.
Granted, some academicians are puffed up with pride. Yet, true scholars are gentle at heart.

I don't believe the public holds such negative opinions of academics, except when academics give advice they are not qualified to give.
The conceited academic is the one who is in academics, not for the love of knowledge, but to secure a pay check. They are not hard to identify; they have an air of pessimism, and they can not see beyond their noses.

On first acquaintance with academics I certainly felt I had chosen the wrong subject. They seemed to have little knowledge of other disciplines while perceiving themselves as intellectually above others. It was a top university, so in a sense their exaggerated self-esteem had some warranty. But their self-recognition was based on limited competition as classics no longer attracts the best as it once did, and in the other fields I studied in there were better people teaching and researching.

Academic institutions should eliminate tenure, provide separate parallel paths for teaching professors and research professors, and establish a free agency process for professors after ten years.

"Who are you? What superficial thing have you done?" Arrogant scientists/academician usually say to other people.
Everything we are able to do, should rather make us humble, after all, the more we discover knowledge, the more we should be humbler that there are many things to learn from nature. We must respect people, give them dignity no matter where they have reached in academics or their successes in life.
