Fetal calf serum is an alias for fetal bovine serum. As a natural product batches differ and are usually tested for the specific purpose. Therefore you may have two brands in your lab.
At first, I thought it were the same, but unfortunately it were different substances, respectively. Both FBS and FCS are from same the brand, Gibco. I wonder why use different substances for the assay, in which many protocols use this principal too. Until now, I did not find the concrete answer for its reasons.
Adult bovine serum contains many more immunoglobulins than the FCS or FBS counterparts used for cell cultures. For cell-based assays using specific antibodies for cell surface and phenotypic expression markers we use 10% (adult) bovine serum as a non-specific immunoglobulin blocking agent.
