I want to detect the somatic mutations for breast cancer disease. Can anyone tell me about the major differences in detecting somatic mutations from blood sample and tissue samples
Hi Snijesh blood sapmles only can detect somatic muations of leukemias Easily , otherwise you should seperate circulationg tumour cells .
In breast cancer , The germline mutation is found in blood samples eg BRCA genes ,
but the Somatic mutations will be restricted to tumour tissue or Circulationg tumour cells
As Fatma said you can detect somatic mutations in circulating tumor cells. But you have to remember that advanced cancers are very heterogeneous from the genetical and phenotypical point of view. So that the circulating cells may not represent all the mutations you may find in a tissue sample.

The upcoming trend liquid biopsy is all about circulating tumor cells in the blood sample. How reliable will it be in predicting cancer like Breast Cancer???
Efficiency of this system remains to be seem. But as technology improves at a certain point accuracy may be achieved with liquid biopsy.
Right now in developing countries like Argentina is not part of daily oncological practice.
