I think that it would be better to use total RNA kit that keeps miRNAs, for example miRNeasy Mini kit (Qiagen) or High pure miRNA isolation kit (Roche/ Sigma). I used both kits for smallRNAseq and qrtPCR and they worked properly. Sometimes enriching on smallRNA can bias the proportion of each miRNA.
You definitely can, but how much success you have depends on the abundance of the miRNA, what type of extraction you use, and how you want to analyse downstream. I've always used Trireagent/Trizol to get both miRNA and mRNA and had no issues.
