When I started to study about cell line culture I had a doubt that is why we should using the medium containing serum after when cells start coming off from the culture bottle? What material contains in medium containing serum for cell line?
Serum is normally used as a supplement to cell culture media. Because it contains broad spectrum of macro-molecules, carrier proteins for lipoid substances and trace elements, low molecular weight nutrients, and hormones and growth factors and it influence for promoting cell health and cell growth. The most widely used animal serum supplement is fetal bovine serum (FBS).
For more information you can see the reaserch gate web link
serum is a highly protective solution, containing growth factors, hormones, chelants and detoxifying molecules. Its use supports the viablity of your culture, in fact it is also employed in cell freezing. For instance, when you freeze cells, you can use 50% growth medium, 40% serum and 10% DMSO, while if cells are very important to your work you can employ 90% serum and 10% DMSO.
