I would like to know the meaning of the intensity which appears as y values in the zeta potential distribution graphs provided by Malvern zetasizer instruments. Could you please explain me what is really measured in the y-axis of these distributions representing the intensity (a.u.) according to the zeta potential (mV)?
Essentially, it is the Fourier transform of the scattered light intensity. That yields a frequency distribution. From that, it can be rescaled on the x-axis to electrophoretic mobility and then zeta potential.
The units of the y-axis are arbitrary since it is simply a voltage being generated by the photodetector.
You can think of it as an audio signal being displayed as a frequency distribution - it's the shape that contains the information and the y-axis scaling depends on amplification level etc.
