I'm trying to synthesize 2',4-dihydroxychalcone using
2-hydroxyacetophenone and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde. I've done several sythesis but all I get was some kind of oil and no precipitate of product after all. I've tried to do it using basic catalyst NaOH with different concentrations in ethanol in room temperature.
Is it necessary to protect those hydroxyl groups before main synthesis with for example MOMCl? Are there any non-standard methods of synthesis?
If both SM consumed complete and its given oil means check that oil? You don't expect always product will comes out as a precipitate. Confirm the new spot formation as a oil. If that case try to do purification or precipitation of oil, then you may get solid. For formation of chalcone ehanolic NaOH is sufficient. If the product formation not observed then we have to see.
Sandeep Chandrashekharappa I've dissolved this oil in ethanol and checked on TLC. I got only spots from substrates, nothing more. Of course it was done after purification of this oil.
