According to the standard submission process, if there are queries regarding your sequence, the corresponding author of the sequence would receive a mail containing the queries that need to be addressed. it is important to reply to the queries in the given deadline; unverified sequences contain some missing/probably wrong information and are not included in BLAST searches.

"Unverified sequence" are common for some markers as matK, which have stop codons and must be annotated properly. For users without experience and without supervision, sometimes is not "easy" to identify these "stop codons" and then, they submit the sequences without annotations and these are classified as "unverified sequences". These sequences are not included in the BLAST searches

Thanks for your answer, from my little experience, GenBank is not working with any sequences have stop codon during the submission process, but Unverified sequence may be due to miss-assembly with other gene or chromosome and now the identification of stop codons was in past depends on the experience but now it can do it by online websites with 100% trust like http://web.expasy.org/translate/

If GenBank staff is unable to verify the accuracy of the submitted sequences and/or annotations, they may now add a comment to the record stating that the sequence is unverified. Until the submitter is able to resolve the issues, such sequences will have the word ‘UNVERIFIED:’ at the beginning of their definition lines and will not be included in BLAST databases.

Whether an author can publish papers on the basis of some complete genome database and omiting the unverified sequence ?
