I am here to ask the key advantages of micro-EDM over LASER and Reverse Micro-EDM over LIGA in terms of process feasibility over materials, machined feature quality and economy. Thank You
The capabilities of micro-EDM cannot be compared with Laser Beam Machining(LBM). Using laser we can produce holes but very complex shapes can not be obtained using LBM but that can be done by micro-EDM quiet effectively. When drilling a high aspect ratio hole using laser taper is the main problem. But the problem of taper is less in micro-EDM. With micro-WEDM we can produce very complex shapes with tight tolerances.
Based on my experience, I can say that complex shape is not an issue with LBM. Taper is a problem in high aspect ratio micro-drilling with laser beams. However, with the use of laser trepan drilling, the problem of taperness can also be reduced to a minimum level. Further, commenting on tighter tolerances is a difficult thing since it purely depends upon type of material, type of laser beams used, etc. As far as I know, high aspect ratio machining in a narrow zone seemed difficult (not sure) using LBM.
As simple as the question itself may sound, it can not really be answered without clearer boundaries are made to specific applications. Tell me your application and even more precise statements are possible.
Dear professor, Thank you for your interest. I need the answer in respect of fabrication of micro holes on brass and copper with an aspect ratio of approximately 10 having diameter 200 micro meter. I would like to add another question in this streamline. Since one of the variants of micro-EDM called 'Reverse micro-EDM' is well known for fabrication of micro electrodes and an array of such electrodes, what is the advantages of 'Reverse micro-EDM' over nearest competitive process 'LIGA' ?
I wish to support Herr Schulze in that clear boundary conditions have to be set before a proper comparison can be made. However, LBM is more suitable when MRR is the more importance performance parameter whereas micro-EDM is more suitable where surface quality is the most important performance parameter.
LIGA is actually a combination of 3-4 processes which means that errors are going to be clubbed in the final product. Moreover X-Ray Lithography is costly and not easily accessible. So RMEDM can be an alternative for cheap fabrication of arrays of positive features.
