I had been for an Interview for a post of Research Fellow, the questions i had faced was.
Qsn: Types of Primer
Ans: I had replied as Degenerate Primers and Primers.
The Interviewer was not satisfied, and he was asking some other types of Primer.
Can someone share the knowledge regarding the types of Primer.
Did they mention the primers were for PCR? if not then there are DNA primers and RNA primers,
universal and species specific primers,
PCR primers and sequencing primers,
and as you said degenerate primers and conventional primers; many more categories exist, the correct answer depends on the context of the interview.
on a lighter note you could have said forward primer and reverse primer

Hi there,
In fact it all depends on the purpose: sequencing, cloning, mutagenesis... Apart from sequencing primers are always used as pairs.
Types of Primers ?
I agreed with the above mentioned comments.....purpose defines the type of primer.....
I agree with the comments. Additionally, during cDNA library prep for RNA-seq, two primers are commonly used- Oligo dT primer and random primer.

Infact, they would have told me. I dont remember as of now, i'll update you guys if i get that info.
Like others already stated. It depended on the purpose. Don't forget about chimeric primers also.....
