Of course, you can polish off nanoparticles using polishing. You do not need a polishing agent for this, simple felt or cloth is enough. Couple of frictions go over it with felt and a couple of hundred nanometers of gold are gone! Do not rub too long, otherwise you have half your electrode eliminated .
