How research can add value for the developement of developing countries?
What I have seen in the developed economies is the focus on research and even politicians are well qualified with experience in research and holding PhD degrees.
How much research make difference? Can we quantify?

To share another example of educated President, Alexander Van der Bellen, the President of Austria, is an economist and holds doctorate degree. In Austria, most of the ministers are well educated and many hold a doctorate degree.
All boils down to $$ spending ... Anything they do should be well spent .
Research for clean drinking water or desalination /water treatment
Improvement in agricultural /harvest
Low cost housing (material etc etc )

Yes, if sufficient fund is available. But it will be better to project the research after considering
1. Actual need of the country,
2. On the available resources of the country with minimum import of resources for research,
3. Avoiding basic research as per practicable,
4. Not by the permanent Government staffs,
5.Not copying the projects of the first world,
There should be a balance between the public needs and expending on research .I will never recommend people dying with hunger and we are busy in discovering movement of molecules and which diet contain which element, how genetic information is transferred.
Research is one of the best way, to make presence in the world and to increase the worth and credintials in the world.
While developing countries need to focus on research, the implementation of results from research should be priotised. In my country, studies are conducted but results are never implemented by politicians.

As Mutasem education should be given first priority then automatically everything will be set right.
There is a proverb "If a man is educated he is only educated. If a mother is educated whole family is educated."
Certainly if the rulers are educated we see tremendous difference in development. Our Chief Minister CB Naidu is typical e.g. He has a nickname Hi-Tech minister.
Research means innovation of new technologies. Innovation is essential for a society, and obviously it is also essential for developing countries. However, implementation of technologies i.e. setting up industries on such technologies (owned by oneself) is also needful.
Human development is based on technologies, and development of such technologies marks position of a country in the world. However, I will suggest to develop Eco-friendly technologies and products for sustainable growth of the society.
If they want develop in academic sector, they must give priority for research.
Research needs to be given high priority in Developing countries as well. There is already a lot done, but it is very basic stuff and of poor quality. The scholars therefore move to other countries to pursue higher levels of research. Thus happens the brain drain. We need to make research much more attractive as well so as to get good and talented people interested in Research.
We hope for that, but do you hope that non-democratic and military regimes will take care of scientific research and develop it?
Yea. If they want to find real solutions for their problems, otherwise they will pay for ready made answers which not always fit to their needs.
I hope they will do. There no use to focus on research in developing countries unless the environment was built correctly to handel the new ideas and develop the required financial investment. In many developing countries the needs of research industries are not avaliable.
Head of military regime think for themselves, not for the nations. If they think about the community, better results can be obtained.

research is not a priority in most of the developing countries. even when some research is conducted, the findings are not going to be implemented because research is not linked with the society needs. the good excuse is the fund but if the decision makers think of research as priority they will involve the private sector and look for other sources of fund. it is matter of realizing the importance of research. then developing a strategic plan with clear vision and goals to be applied in all the universities and research institutes in the country.

Attitude, ego are some problems of some researchers. They want the full patent of their inventions.
Then how a nation will develop properly if people not sharing knowledge with other people. Therefore sharing knowledge is important.
Think how earlier scientists Edison and many created lot of inventions. They don't want to be famous, but when they gone through their harsh and difficult life. They realize to find and search to find solutions for the problems and they developed new inventions.

Every country require education but there are people who not doesn't know even basic foundations of education have developed many investions. Did they learned all scientific theories. No Not all. It's your motivation and ability if u want to improve or enhance the findings. Think. With small resources, what we an develop.
Yes funding is great issue. If we don't have sufficient facilities. Therefore every developing nation should motivate their citizens to contribute in research field. Teach them how we reach till this level and make them to understand. And develop a good relation with develop countries to support the research work.

Yes. Developing countries are often wrecked with serious challenges that retards development in diverse aspects of their lives. It is only via research through which viable solutions to rid off all impediments to their national development could be achieved.

The developing countries perform research and focus on the number of research but not the quality of research, so the results of research represent just information in papers and not investing the research results to convert the benefits to the community.
Dear Dr. Khalid, I fully agree with you when it comes to research in developing countries the focus goes to the quantity of research rather than quality of research. It is a serious issue that should be addressed in each developing country.
A 2-step model may be useful:
1. Educating about what research has been done in other developing countries that may have bearing on the developing country in question (may eliminate duplication of effort by the developing country in question)
2. Research on unique research objectives that the developing in question faces.
Educating about research is not necessarily the same as developing individuals who are capable of conducting research studies on their own and developing a research team of shared responsibilities in the research effort.

Therefore, the answer is yes; for their benefits, developing countries should focus on relevant research that contributes in solving their current urgent problems, and makes their future plans possible.
Of course, Research is part of education, whenever education is improved, for sure the researches will be improve, within this i can say that developing countries should design the researches according to their priorities where researches can move them toward achievements and improvement, i am strongly disagree whenever researches end with no achievements for the nation or sponsor ..... it must have impact otherwise its only spending the money...

I believe that a good complement is that research promotes prosperity. Permits to add value to products producing better international relations. Offer better solutions for problems of all kinds and for lower costs.
The fact remains that research constitute the bedrock of development. The outcome of research if well implemented change the socio- economic and political fortunes of any country. Through research, countries with less endowed natural resources to prosperous nations. countries like Israel, China e.t.c have achieved much developmental goals due to investment in research. Industrial companies have two levels of research. One is the fundamental research in central locations like is found in universities. The other is called Research and Development which works well in a local laboratory that is attached to a factory. For developing countries the R&D model is valuable in that it produces rapid results specific to the location with small teams of people who have different educations and experiences. Advice from far away may be helpful at times, but does not replace the local contribution.

In my opinion, developing countries need to focus on both research and implement results of research (Applied science).
Indeed the research itself is a great achievement and it is required for the development of any country provided that a real implementation system is available and highly supported by the governments. Unfortunately, in developing countries most of the researchers target the promotion when doing researches, while in many instances these researches are neither used by the country of the researchers nor financially supported.
In some instances, the value of the research is seen by some countries as a prestigious issue for getting better rank of administrations and universities. In all situations, the possible benefits do not return to the researchers!!! Many researchers may then see the research as a kind of brain activities. Thank god that there sufficiently developed people that know the value of the research and translating it to useful pproducts.
No doubt research is the basis for creating new mew efficient systems in every aspect of people's lives. When we talk about developing countries with the "developing" research there, one of the issues to influence the impact of the research in general is the synergy of the research - what I mean here is that to have a valuable and deep effect on people's lives research has to be supported in as many areas as possible. For example developing research into some very pragmatic areas like computer science or business and neglecting the human rights or language policy or research into local culture and history will prevent the impact of the research from being holistic and efficient tool to improve people's lives at a broader scale.
Developing countries are in a serious mess. They can't even implement fundamental laws. Implementing research findings is far from imagination
definitely yes. they should be more focused on research as well as more importantly, they should take the steps to implement the findings of those researches to enhance the development in specific areas.
