How would you differentiate between tourism organizations and other service providing organizations (such as: telecommunication, health, education, computer services and/or government services)?
Based on four characteristics we define services i.e. intangible, perish ability, inseparability, and heterogeneity. All the services are defined on these characteristics. Tourism services are also defined on that but the nature of services are different. All the services that are launched to promote tourism or benefited from tourism i.e. hospitality, accommodations, airlines, cruise ships, and entertainment venues, such as amusement parks, casinos, shopping malls, music venues, and theaters. These all are also services that are attached to the tourism. If an organization provide you packages that include all or some part to promote tourism will be tourism services.
Among the different types of organizations that provide tourist services are those known as tour operators, which offercomprehensive services either through their own tourist facilities (for example, hotels, restaurants, and means oftransportation) or through rented facilities. Another category is that of tourist agencies, which act as intermediaries in offeringthe services (such as transportation) of other tourist and nontourist organizations—that is, offering a “package” of separateservices. The third main category of organizations is that of clubs and other associations whose members are consumers oftourist services; this group consists primarily of noncommercial public organizations that are supported by members’ dues, allocations from public funds, private donations, and sometimes earnings from their own commercial ventures.
The main difference between the tourist services and other services is very simple but important: the tourist services are delivered in all cases out of the living location due to the specifics of tourism as a phenomenon: it is travel and temporary stay out of the living location/home place. In fact the consumption of tourism services is always out of home place and in international tourism- out of the country.
Dear Angel, not realy because you can consume entertainment services also at your home town, but tourist services are consumed out of your location as tourism is connected with travel and temporary stay in another place- no matter in your country or in foreign country. .

Tourism is a specialized form of economic development that enables a jurisdiction (city, county, region, state or national) to leverage existing attractions (natural and commercial), hospitality assets (hotels, restaurants, shopping, support services) and infrastructure (transportation, security) to generate income and tax revenue by marketing to visitors. The goal of destination marketing is to accentuate opportunities that lengthen the number of days that these consumers spend in the community and to suitably impress visitors to encourage repeat visits and positive word of mouth.
The tourism industry, and the products and services that fall under its wide umbrella, are complex indeed. Tourism is a subjective experience and an amalgam of products and services - not a single product. Tourism products, like all services, are intangible. The selling of tourism is the selling of images, the destination image is what is actually sold. The tourism product is not a homogeneous product. We cannot standardize a service. Hotels attempt to standardize their service delivery as efficiently as possible through quality control procedures and training and development of their staff.
The most important point that I want your attention to is that perhaps tourism is more vulnerable than any other industry to seasonal fluctuations in demand. Demand fluctuation can be unseen, sometimes due to natural causes, others man-made. Climate and natural disasters, strikes and international events such as Wars and terrorism.
I think that the organizations responsible for the provision of tourism services are related to the season and climatic conditions, while the rest of the other organizations are not linked to their services under these circumstances.
For sure, telecommunication, health, education, computer and even government service all need tourism and hospitality.
Tourist will definitely looking for telecommunication service when reach new destination,
We have term Medical Tourism - where tourist or traveller travel purposely to seek health treatment eg: Plastic surgery, kidney dialysis, outpatient treatment, or even emergency procedure if injury occur during the tour,
Tourist / Traveller often in need of computer service or cyber cafe service to conduct travelling booking, reservation payment service etc,
Education tourism - Malaysia receiving a significant number of foreign students' and while they study in Malaysia, of course their will surely travel, eat and participate in tourism and hospitality related event directly or indirectly relevant to their studies,
Government service - Every country / nation have Ministry of Tourism overseeing the tourism / hospitality business
In other words - Tourism indeed is crucial service sector for every country.
I think to further expand the study - should ask specifically 'How to differentiate between Tourism business and Hospitality business' :) - Jamaliah
