My personal opinion: The abilities of the candidates are not the same. A genius candidate is not compared with a normal candidate. Each candidate walks with his skills, his scientific abilities.... It is necessary to set well-defined criteria for doctoral work. If these criteria are achieved by the candidate then he can do his defense even before 12 months.

There is no limit of time duration for PhD. However, 3 to 5 yrs would be good. Better, just try to fullfill your PhD supervisor expectation. Just provide them result in time what they are expecting. S/he is above nature rule. In PhD, publication matters greatly. It is considered as Iron-gate for PhD graduation. So, better try to publish your research paper in high quality journal at your research field. Then, they can award you degree even in 2 yr or less duration too. Otherwise, there may be high change of getting your partial head damage (PhD), sometimes perfect head damage (PhD) too.. There are so many such cases around us.

Since we live in a rapidly changing world, my opinion is maximum 5 years.

I knew one individual who, at the time of our acquaintance, had been researching and writing for 13 years. I have met others who never complete. This is not necessarily about inability or fear of failure but can be indifference to an academic career, and delight in their research, pursuing it beyond the requirements of the PhD.

We tend to define scholarship in terms of temporal achievement, that is position within an educational institution, status, public acknowledgement but some, very few, are driven simply and solely by love of knowledge and ideas. Professionalisation of scholarship is not necessarily good or the only way.

3-5 years is an optimum duration. The final completion is a function of scholar competencies; supervisor's expectations; quality of publications; self-motivation; research objectives; data availability and data collection among others...Nevertheless, the aim of a scholar should be to try to wind up in a reasonable time adhering to the minimum academic requirements...the scholar can continue working on the research interests throughout their remaining career!

It depends on the project involved and the availability of all the materials ( technical, experimental, references, etc....) required to complete the work. otherwise I think 3-4 years would be okay

Three years is good, I think 4 years is a long period.

Difficult to answer, as it depends on many factors.

Subject, topic, infrastructure of the institution, involvement of supervisor and student, regularity in availability of inputs etc.

All are very much important in this regard.

This depends on many factors that overlap with each other related to the student and the supervisor and the scientific department and the college, and I believe that generally, 4 years is the ideal period of achievement.

It depends on the level of graduate student as well as on his previous works. If he/she worked under same theme since first university grade (in many Russian universities, students write every year so called “term papers” and finally a "diploma" work) and made it well, with a permanent supervisor, then two years is enough for PhD work. If somebody starts fully new work, maybe even five years will be insufficient. I know a person who began studying at a university in his 16 years old, and in 19 he defended his PhD. However, he is only one.

First of all PhD researches are meant to be an original discovery or improvement of the existing one or proving something or some method is not working. It doesn't matter how long you take to finish your PhD, the concern should be whether you accomplish it or not in its originality. As many of you mentioned, there are many compelling factors that postpones the finishing line. Here in University of Nottingham - UK, you need to accomplish and contribute something new to the scientific world, but that is not always hard if you get lucky and have a good supervisors. Switching between fields for your PhD could be a reason as well for late graduation. Here many PhD programs will be finished in 3 years or at most 4.

This is an interesting discussion. At the Technical University of Denmark, the PhD projects must be completed within 3 years, otherwise the department risks being fined by the university. Therefore, instead of adapting the PhD duration to the availability of results, ability of the student or any other factors such as long term failure of a key experimental facility, we have to regularly update the PhD work plan (that has to be defined in details at the beginning of the project) in order to help the students being finished in due time. This is certainly not an optimum model and I would not recommend it.

I hope I am addressing your question in full.

The word “optimum” suggests that something is the best possible compromise between opposing requirements or tendencies. If we accept that view, we must cast our minds further than the idea of duration. Why should it be 3 years or 4 years or even 2 years? Why not one year? That ipso facto refers to the quality of the research work. I am convinced that desired quality cannot be achieved in one year, except perhaps in mathematics. I would venture to suggest quality is a function of many factors, viz., the discipline – is the research in the area of social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, technology?

Quality will also be related to the research supervision given to the researcher, the availability of instruments or equipment, and materials, if we are talking of science, engineering and technology. Often, the equipment may not be available, and have to be designed and fabricated in the workshop, which can itself take time; the fabricated equipment itself may not work and re-design may be needed.

If one is working in, say, the field of astronomy, one might require to design the instrument with help of electronic engineers and technologists, assuming they are available, and then have the instrument tested, after which it can be sent into outer space on a satellite; the wait for a satellite into which that newly designed instrument can be incorporated, can be very long; or the rocket launch could fail as happened very recently, or the satellite may not reach the right orbit. Here, the duration can be long, I imagine.

Not all universities have the same standards, meaning the quality of PhD’s vary between universities, and between countries where the universities are located.

Some universities expect that the researcher has published a minimum number of papers in good journals… that can itself take time. Thus, the issue of optimal or optimum duration must also take into account many factors to be meaningful. Perhaps, readers may disagree with my view, but the above is my 2 cents contribution.

I think that detailed consideration for topic preparation with extensive reading and writing synopsis takes 1-1,5 year. Then, when you know how to organize the research, methodology, conducting the research and writing takes about 2 years, and half a year for corrections. All together 3,5-4 years if everything goes perfectly well.

It largely depends on the area of research - some need more time and only improve after decades of investigation (philosophy, history and others), some have to come out just in time not to become outdated

Some disciplines require primary data collection whereas with increasing availability of Big Data, many disciplines allow secondary data for dissertation. With secondary data, dissertation completion time has reduced to one year.

I completed my Ph.D. research in 3 years. I started my work in March, 1985 and submitted thesis in the 1st week of March 1988. Got degree in August 1988.

It depends on many factors but there are three important factors which will make your phd research smooth ...

1. Your area of work, how much objective you have, are you getting all the results positive. If you are getting all the results positive according to your plan then you can complete your research very fast. If not then you have to keep patience and keep on doing but sometime people get struck and finally dey have to change The whole topic then it will take 1-2 years extra.

2. Availability of chemicals, instrument facility, Project funding, Relationship with guide, patience, motivation Is also one of the main criteria to have your PhD Degree smoothly.

3. The last and the final one You must have Some sort of national level fellowship So that you can spend your fellowship in research when there is Unavailabilty of funding in your lab and chemicals.

Therefore, any one of this point is missing in your research then definitely you will take 5 years or more Than that.

I think three years is enough

It varies from person to person and also on supervisor. If there is coursework such as in the USA, it may take more than four years. But for only research work, I think 3 years is enough. I did my PhD from Australia within 2 and 8 Months with publications in Ecological Economics and Ecological Indicators journal.
