Researchers carry out research which me be conceptual, experimental, survey based , mix of same or any other. It may depend upon area of research also,
What type of research do you prefer and reasons for the same?
Every scientific method has its own reach and scope of research; research into exact parameters can reveal important details of an unsolved problem, but real breakthroughs happen by giving the many puzzle details a bigger picture and meaning, opening new doors for better human practice. This cannot be done technically by 'the positive rationale' (A.Comte) alone, but needs strong humanistic creativity and ingenuity, including the experiment, empirical studies and hermeneutic artistry. Internal validation of scientific data can be done by the mathematical method, but to understand the course of life events, we need a lot of field work for external validation, i.e. every battle is decided on the ground.
In my view, i would prefer to have experimental research with commercial as well as applied concepts in order to replicate it in filed for pilot to full scale.

I do conduct research based on abovementioned approach. My preference is dependent on the research problem, objective or opportunity available after literature reviewed.
Experimental research has always be my choice since it helps me to agree and disagree and also I will be fully responsible for my action and decision taken.
Depends upon requirement of research I will select type of research i.e. conceptual, experimental, survey-based . For instance, to test new drug I will prefer experimental animal study, while to know the opinion I will prefer qualitative interview-based study etc.
It depends on the research problem. In my department, there is a preference for more qualitative research. I always encourage students to use different sources of evidence in presenting their case studies to add trustworthiness of the their research.
But I like to do survey research, so here's one paper with a 19% acceptance rate by a Springer Journal that is example of survey research:
Regardless of type, research is a way to find answers to personal, community, or specific questions. The important thing is to know how to use the tools well and then to be able to publish in a democratic and preferably free of cost form for the readers. If you can apply the results obtained to social benefit, better still. Therefore, the motto is to research with love and enthusiasm to enrich your inner human curriculum.
A direct answer to this question is "Survey Research" .My area of research is management/ entrepreneurship, and most of the research in this area is based on survey research.
Most of the studies I conduct falls into the realms of anthropology such as studying human cultures, practices, beliefs, indigenous knowledge and social lives of people and how it impacts other multidisciplinary areas of human endeavor. As such, phenomenology and case studies under the qualitative approach works best for me.
However, lately, I have fallen in love with the convergent parallel mixed method design as it capitalizes on the strengths of both the qualitative and quantitative data sets to validate findings. The results are splendid, unbiased and more robust scientifically. Two of my upcoming research publications utilized this approach.
Most preferred methodology used is "survey method". But it also depend on the types and area of research.
Survey method is mostly used in social science research. I would like to believe that survey method is more profound and pragmatic since you get to talk in person with the respondents. You also get to know the expression and feeling of respondents while interviewing. You get lots of information with face-to-face interview.
