In my opinion it depends on the research as sometimes it is interdisciplinary project and the work is so extended that would be no limitation .

In my case, four is the maximum. I often work with colleagues and students who contribute to the articles that I write. I have written 11 books and the maximum number of co-authors is two! This is because it is truly difficult to write books with other scholars who have their own ideas and are set in their ways like I am!!

The number of co-authors that are usually involved in a study depends on the quantum of the phenomena to be studied and the period for the completion of the work. However, it's often three but some large projects may require more jig-saw approach where many hands may be required.

However, there are some studies that may not even require any co-author. In such studies, working independently may be more appropriate. The needless hooking up of fake co-authors who were never contributors of the research carried out is unethical and must be shunned by all serious academics who are dedicated to the development of Science.

In my view, two works best for a Conference Paper. In case of research work involving more filed work, four could be there, but beyond four it will be suspected that names are just being tagged, with no actual involvement in the work.

I can not put any final comment, but in many good journals, name of maximum five (5) authors are allowed to write for an article in the reference section. Persons above position number 5 are categorised as "et al.".

The number of authors that worked with you on the paper

I would say as many as the number of people who are able to present the same paper at an international conference. if someone can not present the paper at an international conference,the he or she is not an author

There should be no limits to idea sharing and collaborative research. However, institutions may have cause for limiting number of authors per publication due to obvious reasons.

I have personally noticed that there are many papers on genetic topics that include a large number of researchers. For example, 27 researchers participated in the following research, and if I am not mistaken, I had noticed some research involving more researchers

But, if the journal limits the number of authors, the authors with the least contribution can be mentioned in the acknowledgments.

It all depends on the nature of the research. There should be no limit at all, provided they all participated in the research. A physics paper has more than 5000 authors.

So, sometimes, a good paper may require more than 5 or 6 researcher.

I agree with Lina and Hom. I don't see any reason for a maximum number. All who contributed to the endeavor should have some inclusion. I've co-authored a total of 12 textbooks. The least number of co-authors was two whereas the greatest quantity of co-authors was 11. Similarly, I've co-authored an array of journal articles that had numerous co-authors. So, I'd say, "It depends . . . "

Should I aim for multiple co-authorships?

Based on my experience in many commissions which judge grant proposals, I am convinced that a LONG publication list is better than a SHORT publication list. If there are years between publications, this publication strategy will be judged negatively even if there is a Nature paper in the publication list. A typical comment may be: “Well, he has published a Nature paper in 2006 but nothing in the following years; there is considerable doubt about the scientific productivity and independence of this person”. It is very important to know that your scientific independence will be severely questioned when you have predominantly or even exclusively co-authorships. This is particularly true, when a person is expert in a ‘supporting technique’ such as histology, electron microscopy, imaging or behavioral testing.

As a rule of thumb, I would suggest that the number of co-authorships should not be higher than the number of first/last authorships.

Should I aim for co-authorships on high impact papers?

The same is true for co-authorships on high impact papers. When a person has a considerable number of co-authorships on Nature papers but none or only a few first/last author papers the scientific independence will be severely questioned. Similarly, high impact co-authorships do not help a lot when the average impact factor of the first/last author papers is low.

In conclusion, I would suggest not to waste your time with very high co-authorships when the impact factor of your first/last authorship publications stays low. Focus on first/last authorships. For PhD students, first authorships are the most relevant because at this career stage, last authorships are rather difficult to get. Postdocs *MUST* also aim for senior authorships to show scientific independence when applying for grants and future positions.

I agree with most of the answers made by colleagues. I think the number of authors varies depending on the nature of the research paper due to be presented or published. In my opinion, the number should not exceed 4 for a shared research so that the unity and consistency of reseach are maintained. If the number is bigger, then there might be a lack of coordination which may do some harm to the quality of paper.

It depends on area of research. Humanitarian article normally has 1, maximum three coauthors (Dr. Ashok Pundir is true). But in physico-chemical area, sometimes 4-6 people can works together (different methods etc...). At the same time, I do not believe in articles where the list of co-authors consists of 10-15 people. In Russian scientific slang this is called a "train" ("parovoz"). Usually such list includes the Big Boss, the Big Boss Deputy, etc... This is some legacy of feudalism. Science is so conservative ...
