Due to the short duration of training compared to our regular teaching, the content knowledge to be delivered is quite loaded. Therefore, we adopt the best and efficient instructional methods with high level of practical approaches such as lecture with extensive discussion, slide presentations with reading assignments as well as individual and group presentations and micro teaching for trainees.

As teachers, our job is to spark and build a knowledge foundation that will serve students for a lifetime. This foundation must be comprehensive, based upon fundamental ideologies which students must apply in a variety of ways. Therefore, teaching is knowledge, theoretical or academic based while training is practical and skill based.

The method suggested by Murad A. A. Almekhlafi is laudable. For me, I constantly introduce innovations and curricular changes to the courses I teach in order to meet the dynamic needs of the petroleum industry. The innovations/ curricular changes I have introduced in the courses I teach include (i) Student to lecturer interaction (ii) Student to student interaction (iii) Paradigm shift from the use of local computing to global computing techniques. For instance, the university curriculum of one of the courses ‘Operations Research and Modeling’ I currently teach only addressed traditional operations research tools without consideration for global heuristic techniques. Thus, I introduced mini projects that offer students opportunity to visit the industry to identify problems, apply global techniques to proffer robust solution procedure for such problems and present findings in class for open interaction. This I believe is important because the employability of university graduates depends on high technical and scientific knowledge, practical hands-on experience and excellent soft computing skills.

Training as a short term program requires adequate, highly organized, structured and objective planning of the course to deliver its purpose in short time. While......

Teaching also has similar objectives and purpose as above but the long duration will make it somehow easier to plan and achieve its goal.

I personally believe it depends on the objectives, type of audience and topic as well as the contact time with the participants. In most of my teaching and training workshops I use interactive methods where I encourage participation, of course depending on how large the audience is I might include a group exercise, case reflection or a simple question to the audience to urge them to reflect and engage.

Hi Ashok,

I believe there is a difference. Since training considers a shorter time and its outcomes are practical and intended for a specific purpose, I'd say that trainers would have primary concern for the task being trained upon, and little time or interest for anything unrelated. For instance, vocational education, to me, seems to be more training than teaching...such as training someone to be an automobile mechanic, plumber, groundskeeper, tailor, air conditioning repair, gunsmith, locksmith, and so forth. Now, for teaching, I believe it facilitates not only the learning of the immediate subject, but also inquiries into additional areas that may be brought up during class times -- including tangents from the lessons and encouraging "what if" questions ... so, yes, I believe there is a difference.

Hello,

I believe there is a difference in the approach. As training is short-term oriented, it is focused more on practical skills, with the outcome to master specific tool/ method or similar in order to see output result.

Teaching is a long-term process, offering theoretical background of the whole domain, explaining various interconnections, inputs/outputs, interoperability,including broader implications on industry/ society, etc. If the practical part is not completely covered, the users can have idea what and how it could be used, with already acquired knowledge. Thus, teaching would represent more solid background (basis) for further upgrade.
