Does anyone have an idea/experience about whether cells can be directly seeded on culture plates (eg 6 well plates) rather than on coverslips?

Though I have not ever seeded the cells directly on plate, it seems that avoiding cover slips may be possible (See the link).
But I just wonder if high resolution images are needed, then how can the confocal technician use immersion solution?
Possible disadvantage with doing ICC on culture plates could be that post-ICC protocol, if you are taking images of just one well then the whole process of avoiding light exposure to other wells may be compromised which may further result in photo-bleaching at a rapid rate compared to the cover slip (on a slide) method.
