I have made up a 1M Citrate buffer at pH 4.5. I have then diluted this solution with deionised water to give concentrations of 50 mM, 75 mM and 100 mM and measured their pH.
I've got the following results:
I'm trying to figure out why does the pH increase with bigger dilution and I can't seem to find anything on the web. Is it because citric acid is polyprotic and has several pKa meaning that it's easy to change it's pH with addition of water or is there a completely different reason ? I've done the same experiment with 1M Acetate buffer at pH 4.5 and the pH only went up by 0.01 with each dilution.
