When I read about myocardial reperfusion injury, many papers use heparin before sacrifice mice. Why? Does heparin have any effect and it would manipulate the injury? Or because reperfusion will induce platelet aggregation in the coronary circulation??

I do know, what you are measuring after the sacrifice. However, when we perform ischemia/reperfusion experiments, the heparin is used, before sacrifice, in order to prevent blood clotting in the coronary tree.
