What is the best method to measure diameter of new vessels in tissue,e.g. spinal cord?

Hello!

I would like to study newly formed vessels after spinal cord injury in rats. However, I do not know what is the most suitable method to check diameter or number of vessels and which histological staining is best? Thank you.
