This sounds like an odd question given the modern 'obesity epidemic' but throughout history avoiding starvation has been the deciding survival factor, surplus weight would have been protective.

When necessary the body can adapt to become more energy efficient, as happens during pregnancy. Why is this not the norm? After thousands of years of food being scarce why are we not permanently maximizing the energy we can gain from our food?

Obviously too much weight would negatively affect mobility and speed, but within reason the only downside i can see is that weight gain is associated with increased inflammation? Anyone have some opinions?
