In most African countries, a large number of people rely on charcoal, which is made by burning wood. We are all aware of the climate crisis, and the endless efforts being made to reduce deforestation, as well to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions across the globe. Many countries in Africa have been severely affected by the crisis in terms of food shortage, floods, disease and so on. If African countries are to make a move of banning the production and usage of charcoal( eg in some parts of Uganda), what else can they use? What will this mean for the numerous people who relied on coal, and for the economies?
Brikets can be produced from agricultural residues, biogas from fermentation, normal cooking gas and electricity can be used as substitute
Africa is the part of the world where residue which is not paid for is not utilized. These residues include agro-forest resides and lignocellulosic municipal waste. These are all sources of raw materials for the production of pellet and briquette, which are suitable alternatives to the burning of charcoal. The main cost will be the investment in the acquisition of the machines for the production of pellet and briquette, factory men, utilities and labor.
More than 90% of African people use wood for in-home consumption and few of us use charcoal made of wood.
