There is good number of commonly used macrophage markers such as CD14, CD16, CD64, CD68, and CD71 for IHC and IF; the exact marker to be used depends on the subset(s) of macrophages and the specific conditions of their local environment. It is also important the role that they are expected (or unexpected) to play in the condition studied. It is better to use a lab with long-standing record and reliability of results especially if new findings are expected.
I might also suggest iNOS (M1 marker) as many labs staining for it. There are other markers as well. Here is publication related to this: PMID: 28238121
Cd14 is better marker for monocytes and Cd16 can be also expressed by neutrophils. I would recommend CD68 as a general macrophage marker that identifies many types of macrophages
If you use mice tissue iNOS is fine but if you use human tissue, human expression of iNOS is very low. For M1 macrophage you can co-stain with HLA-DR
Traditional M2 macrophage markers are CD206 and CD163, but in humans the M1/M2 paradigm is much more complex: i.e. there are highly proinflammatory CD206 macrophages.
