Normally an academic dedicates do some hours per week to research, some to teach and some to administration of the Department or Faculty. Some hours are also dedicated to external work, as institutional collaborations. What should be a correct percentage of dedication? For example, in my department, I'm doing 41% of administration, 27% of teaching activities, 27% of research and 5% of external activities. The average values of the School of Architecture UCN are: 55% teaching activities, 21% research, 19% administration and 5% external activities. It seems to me that it will be difficult to do quality research in these conditions. What do you think respect to your percentage?
Dear Massimo Palme, Naturally, most important is teaching. But it varies due to the associated nature of administrative responsibility, community services and research activities. There are no fixed % or norms. It varies from institute to institute and nature of workloads.
Dear Afaq, thanks for the answer. Of course that percentage depends on Institutes and rules, but which can be a representative average? I would be happy with 40% teaching, 40% research, 10-15% administration and 5-10% other activities... In Latin-America administrative work is in my opinion excessive. Also teaching percentage of more than 50% is very high...
Dear Massimo Palme, What about a teaching faculty is serving as Dean, Provost, ... then the administrative percentage is much higher than others ....Similarly, a primary investigator in a project .... more towards research activities than the rest ... Similarly some time community services are dominating ...
