I agree that this is usually the case, i.e., that a dissertation is usually a lengthy document that presents original results. However, there are rare cases where a dissertation occupies only a handful of (a few) pages. This happens in cases where the dissertation introduces the solution of a famous problem or extends known results in some significant way.

Although many of us treat thesis and dissertation as interchangeable terms, there are some differences, especially with respect to size and purpose. Please note that their meanings vary between Commonwealth countries and the USA.
Thesis is a certificate that the author has been trained for doing independent research. A thesis is in the form of a report along with some mandatory certificates, which includes the findings of the research work done by the student in partial fulfillment of his/her academic requirement.
A dissertation is also a certificate for education and conduct of research similar to thesis, but it does not indicate that the researcher is capable of doing independent research. I tend to believe that there is no difference, but length can imply one. At some universities the terms are interchangeable with simply the appellation required: Master's thesis/dissertation, PhD thesis/dissertation. My Master's thesis was for projects between 15-25,000. PhD of course much longer.
Both are same no much differences. Its depending on each higher learning institute term use the term.

A thesis is part of the requirements for some, and not all Masters programs - some require artistic submissions rather than the traditional submissions of written analytic work, for example. It is not necessarily original research in that it may not bring to light new information, but will show the author knows her subject matter, can put it together into a logical sequence and write in an academically acceptable style. A dissertation is usually a lengthy document of original research bringing forward new insights gained from study and research while in one's doctoral program. A doctorate is not only a PhD. There are other doctorates such as the EdD - the doctor of education, for example. The dissertation requires a dissertation committee and an advisor that reviews critiques, and approves (or not!) the final work after the candidate proceeds successfully through an oral defence of the dissertation. In my program Teachers College, Columbia University, NYC, the dissertation was done over a period of years and along with a full year of commitment in which one had to be on campus and in close contact with faculty to also learn the meaning of being scholarly in one's way of being in this world. Some things are not learned merely by doing research online and in libraries. Some of these requirements no longer exist which is why, in my opinion, we have so many stupid people now - ignorant in many ways - and yet they have a piece of paper - a doctorate. The standards that made doctoral study rigorous have slipped considerably, certainly in the US, anyway.
The terms are interchangeable, with the use of the words differing across the Atlantic. Some universities refer to the Masters work as culminating in a thesis, and the PhD as culminating in a dissertation, while others confusingly use the converse notation.

In general the difference is in the degree of graduate studies that are being done. A dissertation is applied to the master's degree while the thesis, for the doctorate. The dissertation is usually simpler due to the time required to obtain the master's degree.

I think that, strictly speaking, a thesis is a novel idea that is posited for examination, e.g. by a doctoral candidate who then gathers evidence to explore its validity. The results are written up in a dissertation. Over time, we have come to merge the two terms into one.
In common usage about academic writing in the United States, I always hear "thesis" as the research or conceptual study completing a Master's Degree, whereas a "Dissertation" is the research or conceptual study completing a Doctoral Degree.
But sometimes undergraduate students write a thesis as part of an honors program, etc.
And of course, "thesis" can also refer to any evidence-based idea, such as the "thesis statement" of a speech or persuasive writing.
Simply put- in the USA, a dissertation is a required PhD document and a thesis is sometimes required for Masters degrees.
