What is the function of EDTA in binding buffer for EMSA?

I just started to do EMSA to check interaction of a protein and DNA. When I checked the binding buffer used for EMSA, I found that EDTA is also used.

I know that EDTA is a chelating agent, and used to chelate metal ions. But I could not figure out that what is the importance of using EDTA in the binding buffer.

DNase (Nuclease) require metal ion to work or to degrade DNA. May be for protection view EDTA added to prevent from any external contamination of DNase. or other biophysical function you want to know go contact company protocol.
