I am working on treatment of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and gold nanocages on various cell lines (MSCs, Cancer cells, Cancer stem cells)
I found out that the viability of the cells were decreased more when treated with nanocages than nanoparticles.
Can you guess why?
I think that it has something to do with surface area... but I don't know the exact reason...

Seonggyu Kwon Gold nanocages can absorb light and heat up to give photothermal effect which can kill cells. Indeed, people use this effect to kill cancer cells. To avoid this issue prevent contact of gold nanocages with light using aluminium foil during preparation and experimental procedures. Thanks.
Sanjib Saha Thank you! just one more question..:) Can the photothermal effect happen under visible light?
I don't think so. Because it absorbs light at near IR region. There might be other explanations behind toxicity. Obviously nanocage would have more surface area as you said.
