Ali - it's unlikely to be around preference. I write a lot of articles and book chapters - and I don't mind either. However, for most institutions their criteria would be that you target high-ranking journals rather than book chapters - for reasons of impact and journalism;-based articles are more likely to be primary research outcomes. In terms of personal preference - it also depends on other factors. For instance, journal articles are more likely to have multiple authors - whereas book chapters usually just one or two. The other factor, for me, is that one is usually contracted to the publisher for book chapters with specific deadlines - whereas that is not usually the case with journals - apart from the later stages of amendment and proofing.
Both are good and worth aiming at as academician but publishing an article is easier, more feasible and author is more productive. Publishing article could also be a learning point for young and new researchers while book chapter require a more experienced and expert in the field.
Book chapters in quality publications are always welcome other publications in good journals are preferable because they are widely indexed and likely to reach wider than book chapters. Thus chances of citations are more.
Similar kind of question was posted in RG earlier too.
Generally, a researcher like to publish a paper in a reputed journal instead of writing a book chapter. However, both are useful to the research community and it all depends on the interest of an individual.
Both are useful and serve different purpose. A good book finds its way into major libraries of the world and are cherished for many years with new editions making it almost perpetual. Wouldn't it be fulfilling to learn that undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers are using your book to advance knowledge in different countries?
On the other hand, the importance of a good article in Q1 or Q2 journals that conveys research findings or review of related literatures cannot be overemphasized. Articles helps launch your findings easily to the scientific community and tends to gather citations overtime which is also fulfilling.
Thanks a lot dear RG collègues. I had asked my question because Im invited to write some C hapiter in my research field. In the same time i'm engaged to writing some papers
I already writing paper however, writing Chapiter can request a lot of time. In addition some edition request a mony for thecparticipate bythe chapter. They request to writing C hapiter and to give money (about 700 to 1000 dollar)!!!!! I think it's abnormal.
I think a high quality book chapter enjoys a higher permanence since it may be used for years by a wider population and readership compared with that of an article.
Researcher for his study & contribution if it is for academic or for the institute where he has undergone training publicity of the research is not necessary .However when researcher carries a program of his research with a certain aim & contribution he does so not for filing or his personal library but in such case he certainly desires to move towards publication or publishing an article in the chapter .
I share the opinion of publishing in a Q1 or Q2 journal, such publication has the opportunity is increasing the frontier of knowledge. Many good articles published in Q1 or Q2 journals have been able to put old wine in a new bottle.
Personally, I enjoy writing both book chapters and also articles.. However, as it is already discussed in the posts, research articles are preferred over book chapter.
It is not a question of preferences. If you want to write journal articles, you cannot simply do that. Your should have generated some results after doing strenuous works. For writing a chapter, you need not have any results at all, rather your chapter is dependent upon the results of others (articles)!
In other words, for the author, an article in a reputed journal is more worthwhile than a chapter!
I believe that the publication of a book chapter or an article is a great contribution to the scientific community. However, scientific articles are more likely to be accessed by the research community.
I think publishing articles in journals with IF could be better than spending a lot of time in writing a chapter. Regarding your h index, articles have more chance to be cited. Even though publishing a chapter or two with a known publisher such as Springer or Elsevier could add a plus value in your CV, you should focus on articles. It'll be better to publish your chapter as a review rather than a chapter.
Paying for publishing a chapter, I'm against this conduct.
Even both are important and contributing, it depends on institution policies where researchers are working.
Publishing in High ranked journals Q1 is more interesting. There is no deadline as book chapters, which means you are not limited by time. Style writing is easy to control for articles than for books that require more effort in term of EAP and language mastering.
I recommend to do both, of course if you have enough time.
For a better visibility of the works, I prefer to publish in journals indexed in well established databases, for the book chapters they takes more times.
The issue of preference should not come in here. It should rather be priority per time. If you get new ideas from a research, it is important that the results are made available to the research community. In the long run, such results may be useful as updates to existing information in books.
Is it useful for a researcher to publish an article or a chapter ? I appreciate many of the answers. However, the question was very specific "for a researcher". I think primary research data, the research has an obligation to share it in a peer reviewed publications as soon as possible to be timely enough to be debated, cited and counted in the ongoing research process. Later on, as Ebhohimen mentioned above, contributions to chapters become more appropriate and one is usually invited to contribute to chapters relevant to he/her research contributions.
Both are extremely different. Paper in a journal usually is a work with a interpretated results. Moreover, papers in journals are more citable than book chapter. Book chapter needs long time and alot of efforts and a good publisher and is less visible than paper.
Articles are more citable than publishing a book for authors to get high H-index. although I think that writing a chapter is more heavier and more effective than the articles since chapters needs to be written by an expert and also most published chapter get from invitation by publishing house.
When comparing publications of scientific articles with a chapter in a scientific monograph, various editorial issues should be taken into account, the issues of the significance of specific types of scientific publications in the context of propagating specific research results and new scientific concepts.
In my opinion, the publication of a chapter in a scientific monograph is more or less in the middle between the publication of an article in a renowned scientific journal with a high Impact Factor and a scientific journal without Impact Factor.
Ideally, first publish a research paper in that case the material belongs to you. You can publish book chapter later or someone else can publish book chapter with your permission of your work.
As you already have many papers in a specific issue, so i recommend to try to publish a book chapter. If you want to get more citations, try to publish a review article or a chapter. As in our country, writing a chapter book has high score for promotion, so i suggested the book chapter.
