I use several social networks for business and private purposes... LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Tumblr and Google+... LinkedIn is really business network and I strongly recomed it. Other networks you can use for both purposes... Facebook and Twitter definitely but do not forget on Instagram and specially on Pinterest...
All these networks have their special characteristics and my recommendation is that you think about all/some of them...

LinkedIn is useful for networking with professionals. Facebook is also helping in connecting with people. Social media is useful in increasing connectivity with professionals.

yes social media connects you and makes you aware of the world around you. researcher will not prefer to live in isolation, they are human being so they like to be social, but there should be limited use of social media. excess of use of social media is poisonous.
