Since almost all the programs used for NGS data analysis are runing in linux environment, Linux (like Ubunto) is to be loaded in the PC.
You can try Ubuntu (or other GNU/Linux distributions) without actually installing it on your computer’s hard drive. You can do this by starting up your computer with either an Ubuntu DVD in the drive or a USB stick with Ubuntu on it in a USB port.

You can install some programs in the "live" environment, but generally those installations will be lost upon reboot ("live" meaning "non-permanent").
If you decide to install a GNU/Linux distribution, you can often choose to keep your other OS side by side with something called a "dual boot".

The dual boot means that you boot into either one or the other OS at any given time, but never together.
An alternative would be to use a virtual machine on your other OS running Ubuntu:

With the virtual machine, you can use your Linux programs without leaving the other OS. If used sporadically, this could be a reasonable compromise. However, be warned that virtual machines are much slower than native ones, and may present some glitches, specially if the virtualized program uses high-end resources that cannot be easily virtualized (ie high-res video or audio, or peripherics management).

If your System RAM is more the 3GB , you can simply install light version of LINUX i.e Ubunto on your system along with Windows.
Download ubuntu from their website, copy the iso file in to a CD or bootable format in flash drive. restart the system and go to boot menu-> select eithe USB or CD drive which ever u have the OS-> follow the instruction-> it will Ask for partition-> partition the disk for ubuntu. on or after installed it requires network connection to download drivers. for further clarification mail me to [email protected]

First at all, you must see if there is a partition available in your PC. I prefer to download from a CD.
Ubuntu is very simple to install. Download the iso image, write on CD and run the executeble just under windows. Alternatively, do not write onto CD, but just unpack iso image using appropriate software ( I use Total Commander) and run the executabele.
Ater reloading the computer you will see the choice to load Windows or Ubuntu. It is better to turn off antivirus software when manipulating with Ubuntu image, otherwise the antivirus may damage the installation files. it happens to me when I am using avast
