My specific questions on bioinspired photonics include

  • Are there specific diatom species that are more suitable for forming photonic crystals? what can be possible natural habitat for the diatoms?
  • How morphology and chemistry of diatom colony can be controlled? to obtain a tailored-structures photonic crystal assembly, has there ever been genetic engineering tried?
  • Is it possible to observe photonic crystal properties on diatom colony in-vivo. i.e . in alive state without killing the cells?
  • can photonic crystal property change of diatom colony (say, refractive index or transition metal ion concentration change by metabolites) be taken as diagnostic tool for colony health?
  • How the cells can be processed (of course, not in alive state) to make a bulk photonic crystal?
  • Is it possible to discover important findings of quantum mechanical effect on macromolecules, "large" periodic structures, and phonon as well as photon propagation through biomaterials through this research? and can these findings be useful as diagnostic tool for biotechnological/microbiological/ecological application?
