Did it ever happen to you, that you thawed a cell line frozen in the N2-tank years ago by some former lab member and you start wondering if you are really dealing with the cell line you think you are?

It recently happend to me that I thawed some old vial of cells which were supposed to be MCF7 cells, but later turned out to be some unknown cell line, because of morphology, transfectability, behavior etc. We finally bought the cells from ATCC, but you can't always order new cells, right?

Could anyone suggest a reference for some easy and reliable method like RFLP or similar, that allows you to easily do a authentication testing of the cells you are dealing with?
