I did sequencing and identified my bacteria by blast in NCBI. I feel my bacteria is of novel strain. Will FAME analysis prove to be useful in deciding the novelty of my bacteria?
FAME analysis is mainly used to identification of bacteria. In some cases, if you are interested in extra-cellular lipids like phospholipids, then FAME results will help to compare the membrane lipids and ex-cell lipids to understand the metabolism.
Nowadays, FAME analysis used as supporting information for molecular identification data. Its varied depend on culture conditions and cell age. If the 16S rRNA gene sequence homology is lower than 98.6% (Kim et al., IJSEM 64, 346-351) with any type strains, novelty is already proved. And if you hope to reporting it as a novel taxa, you should analyze physio;ogical, chemotaxonomical properties of the strain. These include FAME, polar lipids etc.
