In India, is it necessary to obtain the ethical clearance so as to use the Zebrafish for research purposes. In CPCSEA guidelines, nothing was mentioned about Zebrafish. I need an advice in this regard from the people who are researching on Zebrafish from India.

It's my personal opinion that you can get IAEC approval before using zebrafish for research. This is not mandatory though, as it is not mentioned in the CPCSEA guideline yet. I am one of the CPCSEA's nominee and when I attended the training program organized by CPCSEA, we raised this question of using zebrafish without getting IAEC approval, the answer we got was that they are making changes or bringing about the amendments to CPCSEA SOP regarding usage of zebrafish, meanwhile the scientists are requested or encouraged rather to submit proposal to IAEC to get approval to use in the research. CPCSEA encourages the usage of zebrafish in the place of mammals as it helps in 3Rs principle in Replacement of mammals with lower sentient species and Reduction of usage of mammalian laboratory animals if the zebrafish results are similar to the results obtained from mammals for your research questions, esp. in academic research. Moreover, IAEC approval has become mandatory for publishing articles in the international peer reviewed journals for the research done in zebrafish.
The regulatory studies are to be done mostly in mammalian laboratory animals as per the guidelines such as OECD, ICH, Schedule Y, etc, which have not yet approved the zebrafish results in place of mammalian research for getting approval to support the clinical trials or marketing approval.

Thank you for your kind updates on the topic. But I am still confused, that whether I can start working on Zebra fish or not without any ethical approval?
As per discussion with CPCSEA it is mandatory to get ethical approval for the experiments being conducted on vertebrate animals. Therefore this includes experiments on fish too.
I agree with Dr Awanish Mishra. CPCSEA regulations state that " anything higher than invertebrates in terms of level of sentience requires regulation." Fishes fall in vertebrate hence needs ethics approval. However there are instances where research on invertebrates such as Drosophila, too has been considered for ethical regulations.
This is a recent development that approval is needed for working with Zebra fish, however, not many institutes are having any meetings/ board to approve/ monitor studies using fish model unlike rodent models. I agree with Dr. Srinivasan's reply.
