Mucormycosis (zygomycosis) is an opportunistic life threatening fungal disease of public health concern.It is well established that immunocompromised hosts are at a grater risk of getting opportunistic fungal infections including mucormycosis.It is imperative to mention that many cases of rhinocerebral mucurmycosis are observed in patients suffering from diabetes mellitus (DM).

Our experience of working in Mycotic diseases since 1970 indicate high incidence of fungal infections in immunocompromised patients. Recently, we have diagnosed rhinocerebral mucormycosis in a diabetic patient by employing standard mycological techniques.
There has been an increase in the fungal co-infections in COVID-19 patients. Cases of potentially fatal rhinocerebral mucurmycosis have also increased. This increase can be related to SARS-CoV-2 damage to the respiratory mucosa, use of drugs like remdesivir or tocilizumab and the use of steroids and excessive use of antibiotics (1-2).
