I am not sure if GCs can cause reverse engineering to make oncogenic cells into cancer stem cells. I think they can cause the population of cancer stem cells present in every tumor to expand.
in clinical practice, most patients with malignant gliomas are on glucocorticoids at some point during the course of their disease. assisting in reducing the peritumoral interstitial edema by decreasing endothelial and gap-junction permeability.
working through NF-K-B, steroids have been extensively reviewed in gliomas.
the role of microvasculature reactivity is highly sought currently.
the beneficial life saving value of steroids in patients with malignant gliomas is unmatched, so much that not giving it is considered a sub-standard treatment.

Have you seen S. Adeberg article : Metformin influences progression in diabetic glioblastoma patients ( Strahlenther Onkol (2015) ?It is a different point of view but still looking into the same question: They showed that corticosteroid therapy and hyperglycaemia were strongly associated with impaired survival rates and serves as a negative prognostic factor. I am just analysing a material consist of 250 patients with glioma gr. I-IV. to see if there is a correlation between serum lactate and steroid use/glucose levels/size of the brain tumor / grad of malignancy. In the next step would like to study if there is any association between serum lactate and tumor free/overall survival. Ev. steroiduse; lactate and survival. Does glucocorticoids elevate glucose, which will fuel aerob glycolysis( Warburg effect) and optimize tumor metabolism?
