Cancer stem cell-like cells have been described with side population (SP) phenotype. Side population (SP) appears to be a flow cytometry term to demark cell clusters with marked capacity to enable the efflux of DNA binding dyes through ABC transporters. Exposure to either calcium channel blockers or inhibitors of ABC transporters leads to the disappearance of these side population cells. Cancer stem cell-like cells with side population (SP) phenotypes can occur.
