To collect salivary samples (about 1 ml) from spider monkeys. The samples will be analyzed to determine cortisol, melatonin, serotonin and testosterone through ELISA tests. Thanks for any suggestion that you may have!
Citric acid can be used to increase saliva secretion but it may have an impact on the assay of some analytes. Have you ever heard about Salivette from Sarstedt? it is a cotton swab device with a tube allowing the collection of saliva through the "chewing" of the swab or its disposition in the mouth? It can help recover good volumes of saliva without saliva hypersecretion. Salimetrics is another company specialized in assaying various analytes in saliva and they also propose a hkind of cotton or synthetic swab to collect saliva. They also edited some general recommendations about saliva collection which could help you, so I've enclosed the file. Hope it helps!
Thanks for your answers. I found the Salimetrics file very helpful! I am still trying to figure out an effective way to get clean samples in sufficient volume though, so if there is any further advice, I will be happy to hear it.
