I am working on a new material so to understand its cytotoxicity I performed a MTT assay test. The sample showed a metabolic activity of 83%. So is this sample cytotoxic or bio compatible. Are there any range for classifying cytotoxic and bio compatible material?

I am not sure I get your question correctly but in case if right then I think you should check,
a. SI Index
b. IC50
c. pH of the media
d. cell confluency as compared to control
which would explain the toxicity of the material.
Assuming that you are using dilution based addition of the material in 96 well plate.
THe MTT is a very bad assay.. For exemple somes cells have a very fast recycling through endocytosis and exocytosis... and this concern MTT internalization and metabolization, that render the probe non effective in measuring viability of toxicity of products... What is the significance of this '83% metabolic activity after 24 hrs of MTT assay test'? What information can I draw from this result?
Since most of the time MTT assays are used as a viability measurement, this not quite adequat... MTT give an idea of the redox state of thecell populations. VBetter to run viability assays with permeant labelling PI, TO-PRO-3, YO-PRO-1etc... by flow cytometry since by multiparametric analysis they can be combined with other cell sugnalling-related assays.
