In contrast to what my colleague is mentioning above, MALDI-TOF-based identification is not that expensive. Indeed, the method is not suited for quantitation, but I guess that is not what you're looking for, is it? Peptide mass fingerprinting using MALDI has been around for ages, but it might prove slightly more difficult to generate a sensible MS/MS spectrum on a MALDI-TOF/TOF machine.

May I ask why you seem to have a preference for MALDI-TOF analysis? ESI-TOF, or ESI-Orbitrap, MS/MS analysis are likely to yield better sequence results, so you might (also) want to look for that opportunity.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to provide the requested support, but I know there are ample academic MS laboratories that are able to help you out.

How do you know is a peptide?

Have you done any purification steps?

Is the peptide found in the growing media?

Do you know any of its properties?

I guess you are interested because is able to kill other bacteria?

What type Gram + or -

Answering all those questions would help you to isolate the compund

We have several ways to analyse antimicrobial chemicals (and peptides) where I work (MALDI TOF -TOF, Q-IT-TOF and Orbitrap), but most of the work is done on purifying and understanding what the properties are

I can recomend you use Mass spectrometry ESI-FTICR (Electro-Spray Ionisation Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance). It is much more sensitive method than MALDI TOF MS/MS to identify proteínas. I agree with the questions is doing Leonardo Pantoja and would likeask you which do the condition of your sample are? How big is your peptide?
