The question you have asked is a very interesting and relevant one in context of actual implementation of biofuels. Regarding the promotion of bio-diesel and bio-ethanol, their compatibility of 'blend in' with the diesel and gasoline has worked in their favor. Plus recent performances with existing engine prototypes are also found satisfactory, guaranteeing their entry in the fuel market (obviously large scale production is still a distant reality). They cannot entirely substitute the fossil fuels but can support their conservation to an extended time-span.

At the UNEP DTU Partnership we undertook a couple of studies which investigated the biofuel potential that could be sourced domestically (or externally) in order to address the targets in the National Biofuel Policy as well as in India's (I)NDC targets. We also prepared a Biofuel Roadmap document for India that looked at feasible options.
