I think Nutrient Broth and BHI are both good for that if you need a liquid media or MH agar if you need an agar plate solid media.

LB broth medium

Lb broth is good for bacterial growth and Nutrient agar is better to swab the cultures.

EUCAST and CLSI standards refer Muller-Hinton agar or broth as the gold standard culture media for drug susceptibility testing. I believe you should start with those, particularly as you are considering quite common bacteria. They will not have problems to grow in this media, you will have standard controls of your experiment, using other antibiotics that your strains are resistant and susceptible to, complying with international standards. I think it's the best approach. 

Mueller Hinton agar

To do the test properly, you should use Muller Hilton (MH), or sometimes MH II (depending on the antibiotic). As stated above, MH is the recommended medium.

You can use  Muller Hinton Agar  for this test

Mannitol salt agar is Selective medium for Staphylococcus aures and EMB agar is selective medium for E.coli. Suppose you want to analysis antibacterial activity of these strains, you can use Muller Hinton agar (Himedia). 

To comply with EUCAST and CLSI standards and thus to be able to compare your results with those of other groups, Muller-Hinton (MH) agar should be used. Most clinically relevant bacterial pathogens will grow on MH agar.

We carry out high throughput susceptibility testing with S. aureus using both MH agar and MH broth. This is also the case for many groups, one of the advantages of MH is that does not contain some of the antibiotic inhibitors that are found in other media, it also has a lower level of high MW compounds which might interfere with the antibiotic. It may require some supplements, for example to adjust the cation concentration, when testing certain drugs.

Hi vinay,  In my lab we are doing antimicrobial screening on different pathogens like both gram positive and negative strains including Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli. Mueller Hinton agar/broth is the suitable for  both the strains.

Nutrient agar/broth is suitable for both Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli.

We had been doing this with E coli only. U may contact MTCC chandigarh for suitable organism and the media for.

Hello Mr Vinay. In my faculty, we would use Iso-Sensitest Agar (ISO) or Mueller Hinton Agar (MHA) for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. All the best!

In both organism you can use Mueller Hinton Agar

For culture activation in S. aureus u can use Nutrient broth and for E. coli luria broth.

But for checking the susceptible test Mueller Hionton agar is suitable for both organisms.

Muller Hinton is the standard broth/agar for AST

mannitol salt agar, which is a selective medium with 7–9% NaCl that allows S. aureus to grow,

Muellar Hinton agar and broth will do just fine. Conventionally used for antibacterial sensitivity testing.

Mueller-Hinton 2 cation adjusted broth/agar or Iso-Sensitest broth/agar. MH2 is better than MH as it is cation adjusted. There are variations between the makeup of MH broth/agar depending from which manufacturer it is purchased. This can lead to differences in results produced. However, MH2 and Iso-Sensitest are more consistent in their makeup and therefore more reliable.

The simplest of all and yet giving statistically valid results is the LB medium or Mueller-Hinton medium.

CLSI & EUCAST recommended media for testing E. coli & S. aureus are Mueller Hinton agar &Cation adjusted  Mueller Hinton broth. 

There is no need to be confused, Muller Hinton Agar and Broth will definitely give you an excellent result.

Yes I am also agree with Tenny Egwuatu that Muller Hinton Agar and Broth will be excellent media for drug susceptibility test.

Hi, susceptibility testing are always done on Mueller Hinton agar or broth. You can store these media at +4° for 1 week  without adding antibiotic. however sterile MH broth car be stored at +4 for several weeks.

As per standard We have used muller hinton agar and broth for this  organisms we did not faced any difficulty so you can proceed with MH agar and broth. 

Muller Hinton agar shows very good zones by using disk diffusion method it is very useful in knowing antibiotic resistance of enterobacter organisms

I want to test the antibacterial activity of marine invertebrate animal bryozoan. But unfortunately, In my laboratory, there is no MHA media, only I LB media is available. So, in that case, do You think that it will be appropriate? 

Any ideas if MH broth has ever been successfully used for Mycobacteria and Legionella?

what about nutrient agar media for bioassay antimicrobial activity??

The BSAC recommended use of isosensitest media for antimicrobial susceptibility especially for non-fastidious organisms, Gram positive and enterobacteria. But thymine and thymidine-dependent E.coli strains may not grow, thus the media should be supplemented with 0.5mg/l menodione and 2mg/ml thymine to enable the growth of such strains.

You should get results with nutrient agar/broth or trypicase soya agar/broth.

Ideally it is Muller-Hinton agar/broth. However you may try Nutrient Agar/broth or Tryticase Soya Agar/ Broth. It all depends on your need.

Undoubtedly broth media is suitable to observe the antimicrobial activity, especially Muller hinton Agar.
