I need to react an aromatic aldehyde with an active methylene (flagged by an ester and an ether group). Chiral auxillaries are very expensive. Methods based on proline as a catalyst are reported, but has anyone tried them on larger scales?

I tried these, but they didn't work well on a large scale (in mg scale they were okay). Methods must be amenable to large scale synthesis.
