I've been using these dyes for bromination activity purpose and it would be of great help as to if anyone can tell me out of phenol red and thymol blue which dye is more sensitive and why?
Phenol red is more stable as a molecule compared to thymol blue ,the phenol red molecule exists as a zwitterion and is soluble in water you can say it is solid ionic compound while thymol blue is not zwitterion insoluble in water it is normal organic molecule therefore I can say it is less stable and more sensitive to changing conditions. Good Luck
Hi Apurva Dusane, when you ask about the sensitivity of the two dyes, it would be helpful if you could specify the type of sensitivity. Compounds can be sensitive against oxidation, hydrolysis, heat etc.
Dera Apurva Dusane, generally I can say that both dyes contains rather unstable "sultone ring", which comprises a C3SO3 ring system. This ring is unstable towards hydrolysis and is easily opened when dissolving the dye in water. In this sense there is no big difference between phenol red and thymol blue. Thermally, phenol red appears to be more stable than thymol blue because its melting ppont is ca. 80 °C higher.
