I want to perform apoptosis assay of caco-2 cells. I want to measure the live and dead cells. I don't have access to Flow cytometry, so I would like to use stain and then count the cell number with hemocytometer. Can anybody suggest me cheap yet effective dyes for staining dead and alive cells?

It is suggested that Hoechst Staining, or the Annexin V-FITC kit can be used for this.

We used a cheap and simple staining to detect live and dead cells. We prepared 10 ug.ml solution of Acridine orange and ethidium bromide. Its a quite simple technique and you can quantify as well. See if this article can help you. Ask me if you have any doubts.
