I think in positive psychology Eagly & Wood perspective about gender roles (is an element of cultural context) is the most used theory (specially in character strengths research), I think it works well, but I think it also depends on the culture which you're analysing.
Here you can find some information about it:
Eagly, A. H., y Wood, W. (1999). The origins of sex differences in human behavior: evolved dispositions versus social roles. American Psychologist, 54, 408–423. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1037//0003-066X.54.6.408
Wood, W., y Eagly, A. M. (2002). A cross-cultural analysis of the behaviour of women and men: implications for the origins of sex differences. Psychological Bulletin, 129, 699-727. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1037//0033-2909.128.5.699
Also I think it's important to consider Brofenbrenner's theory, it is posible to apply it into positive psychology field, but I don't have enough information about applications of this theory on positive psychology.
I hope this helps. If you need more details, please let me know.
Thank you for your mindful reply to my question perhaps I will send the paper to you for a close looking if you would like. Anyway, I am grateful for your comment.
I would like to give you some answer, but I don't totally understand your question. What do you mean by can work? That you can use to explain fender difference associated to culture but trough an approach of psitiv psychology? Because there is a lot of work on gender difference but one that is under the umbrela of positive psychoogy, i'm really not sure...
It would be interesting to have a copy of your paper, so I can take a look and provide you more information and also a wide point of view about how to assess what you want to consider on your research. I know more things about gender issues, and also about positive psychology, specially about character strengths, but I need more details.
If you need my help, please e-mail me: [email protected] (I have this e-mail on my research gate profile).
Self-determination theory works well for both men and women. It can be used to address individual-level motivation constructs or culture/organization-level constructs. Please see their website for a great deal of information, http://www.selfdeterminationtheory.org/
Thank you for your response to my question. As you know already much of literature on positive psychology theories and self-determination related to gender roles in the West but there is a lack of evidence about the role of gender in positive constructs in the East, particularly in the middle east and Iran. Since cultural context, gender-linked roles, social resources and labor classification differs for males and females in the West and the East how we can conceptualize the role of cultural context in emergence of positive psychology constructs such as happiness, optimisms, subjective-well being, positive emotions and... in males and females. I think positive psychology constructs undergo by cultural factors but we need a clear conceptualization in this field. So, we should search for a comprehensive conceptualization that help to understand how cultural elements in a given culture can produce gender differences in positive constructs; and how we can apply them for prompt of positive constructs at individual, clinical and organizational levels in a society.
Regarding Sex differences in cognition behavior, attached are two articles that address the growing evidence that there are many sex differences found all over the world (universal sex differences in cognition and behavior). This may help you.
Hi, I am a novice M.A. student (on Counseling Psychology) working with my superviser on positive psychology constructs like psychological/subjective/social well-being, happiness, hope etc. and my thesis is also on the relationship between social well-being and emotional expressivity. I am also interested in gender differences. I am studying in Turkey, which have supposedly similarities with your target area like religion, gender roles, colloctivism etc. I will try a reply also for my clarification and self reflection.
What appears to be one of the most important issues in culturally-based investigations on positive psychology is I think, the adaptation and/or development of valid and reliable scales into the target language/culture, psychometrically sound instruments, or qualitative research tools and procedures is the first prerequisite of studies on this area.
Another important issue seems to be a careful investigation on the social structures and institutions and their effect on the human behavior and cognition. To name a few, the religious institutions, like mosques, religious communities, sufi orders, ethnic diversity and ethnic affiliation (divergence in the gender roles in different segments of society).
Another issue is the careful investigations and critiques on the concepts in itself. (for instance, Ryff's model of Psychological well-being, and other concepts and models are criticized for being western oriented i.e. having "Euro-American cultural roots", see (Christopher, 1999 cited in another book for critiques))
